Wrinkles and Sagging Skin

NOTE: This is an older post from my forums at OurFitnessArmy.com. I wanted to repost here as the question has come up a few times and my blog is easier to link to than the forums...
One of my peeps was asking what to do when he has a bunch of extra skin from losing all that fat... I am looking more into it, but here's what I found and sent her so far. The html gets lost in the paste, but you can follow the link where indicated. There is a lot more knowledge I am sifting through, but for a quick post...
The skin is a funny organ…
Losing that “extra” skin after rapid weight loss can seem a long time, even impossible without surgery. But it’s not. If you lost a bunch of weight without maintaining a fitness program with a significant amount of resistance training, you undoubtedly lost weight in the form of both fat and muscle tissue. As you lost fat, you didn’t need as much muscle to move the extra weight around in your daily activity, so your body consumed it as stored, unneeded fuel. You may now be significantly lower in weight, without a significant reduction in body fat percentage. Most likely, though, it was a combination of the two.
Turns out, the skin is greatly affected by this body composition relationship! I think when people talk about tone, this is part of what they are looking for. I would definitely put surgery on the back burner. A tummy tuck, for example, is hosts a very painful recovery and can take a full year to get back to normal… not to mention the scar. Let’s first focus on some toning, some dietary changes, and some other skin tightening techniques, all while finding a way to measure our success by periodic pictures or measuring tape, or something… I have some ideas.
Fitness:
If P90X is too extreme for you (and I tend to think it is a tough place to start), I may recommend TurboJam. Chalean Johnson is the leader of this plan and she is fun, geeky, and easy to relate to. Gena (wife) loves the program and has been leaning more toward it as her fall back workouts. I dig it but am up to doing it with 2.5lb wrist weights. She also has a newer set out called Chalean Extreme. I haven’t had a chance to try this yet, but it seems a mix of P90X and TurboJam. She has one about to come out called TurboFire which is being marketed as TurboJam meets Insanity. I love Insanity. Point is, there is room to grow once you realize that exercise can actually be FUN!
UPDATE: Turbo Fire is here. Gena and I have been doing it in the mornings and it is fun! I can't use my 2.5lb wrist weights anymore, I am back to 1lb wrist weights.
Nutrition:
Any of our Beachbody programs comes with a nutrition plan. If you follow this, you are golden but that doesn’t seem to fit the Adams way of eating so consider this: Carbs control insulin production. Insulin controls fat storage. Limit the refined carbs, limit the stored body fat. I have been able to stop counting calories with this simple rule. I will talk to you over the phone to fine tune something that fits your current kitchen style.
Other skin tips:
There are some interesting things to try online. I will look more into these with time, but check this out! I will help you with 4 and 5.
How to Tighten up Loose Skin After Weight Loss
By Karen Cotton, eHow Member
Tighten up loose skin after weight loss
While losing weight can transform your body and health for the better, for those who have managed a large weight reduction it can create new problems. If weight loss has been achieved rapidly, the successful dieter can be left with loose skin, particularly around the abdomen. There are many products which claim to tighten skin, however their results are minimal. Surgery is an option in extreme cases, but before considering such a choice, it's worth following these steps.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
• Time
• Will power
• Perserverance
1. Think of how long it took your body to reach your highest weight. It didn't happen overnight, so you can't really expect your skin to become taut in such a short space of time.
Many surgeons recommend waiting two years from the day you reach your weight loss target before even considering surgery. This allows you to exhaust all options available naturally before entering into a costly and potential dangerous operation.
2. Nourish your skin and encourage it's elasticity. Exfoliate your skin daily to encourage removal of dead skin cells. Doing this each day will stimulate your skin's circulation which should help in tightening skin up.
3. Treat yourself to a hot hour-long bath once or twice a week. While the bath is being drawn, add 1/2lb of pure sea salt to the water and allow it to dissolve. Besides relaxing your body and muscles, it will draw toxins out of your skin and will improve your overall skin tone.
4. Determine what your body fat percentage is. It's impossible to differentiate loose skin from body fat without this figure. Many gyms are able to assess your body for this.
5. While you may have reached your goal weight, it's possible that your body fat percentage is still high. In order to reduce this, you should strive to change your body's composition by reducing fat and replacing it with muscle. If you haven't done so already, speak to a gym or a personal trainer to work on an exercise plan which will help you achieve this.
6. Aloe vera extract, soy protein and yeast extract can improve your skin's elasticity by increasing your body's production of elastin and collagen. It not only tightens your skin but your skin's natural defenses as well.
7. Coconuts can help tighten your skin up!
Eating raw food such as cucumber, tomato, olives and coconut can mark an improvement in your skin's elasticity.
8. Hyaluronic Acid is naturally found in our body's tissues. It depletes over time, so it's worth supplementing your diet with some. It is critical for muscle growth, so if you're replacing pounds of fat with muscle, it's definitely worth taking. Smokers tend to be lacking this nutrient. It needs magnesium to synthesize, so ensure you're taking magnesium daily to reap its benefits.
