Cleanse Diets, I'm a Fan.

I am a huge fan of cleanse diets done right. There are lots of them out there that are good. I use one myself about quarterly.

A cleanse period works by flushing out fecal matter mostly. By cleansing the bowels, the body flushes out many toxins also which confuse your nervous system and mess with your metabolism and other complex systems. Further, this allows you to more effectively process food post cleanse. This helps reduce cravings because your body is getting the most it can out of what you eat.

On the downside, most cleanses are extremely calorie limiting; this is where the weight loss happens that isn't just undigested matter. Some have you drink only juice for example and severely limit or eliminate food consumption. If you're on this sort of diet, it will be better if you don't have to perform any sort of physical activity or any sort of thinking. Trying to exercise on such an extreme calorie deficit can cause injury.

UrbanDictionary.com had this feature about one of'em:

The Master Cleanse Diet
A ridiculous diet made popular by celebs, especially Beyonce after she lost 20 pounds on it. Basically, you eat and drink nothing but lemon maple syrup water for at least ten days. Your body goes into starvation mode and you drop, like, FIFTY BAZILLION POUNDS. The recipe for the master cleanse juice is:
60 ounces of filtered water
12 Tablespoons of organic grade B maple syrup
12 Tablespoons of organic lemon juice
1/2 Teaspoon cayenne pepper powder
I've tried it once. ONCE. Nearly died; I felt as if I would never feel happy ever again (lol dementors)
I dropped about seven to nine pounds in on week, but felt like a living corpse. All I could do to avoid the hunger was sleep. All day. The mere mention of food or dining made me feral.
Pretentious Betch: Oh snap, I can't fit into these size 00 jeans. Time to guzzle some master cleanse!
Logical Size 4 Girl: The master cleanse diet? As in, to cleanse yourself of toxins? You're doing it to cleanse, right?
Pretentious Betch: Suuuuure am!

Were I designing a cleanse, there are some things I would ensure, but remember, I am an athlete. I use this cleanse while on rest periods or to jump-start a new person into a healthy lifestyle.
  • To make the cleanse most effective, it should have a healthy dose of probiotics, prebiotics, and digestive enzymes. This will help build your digestive health as opposed to destroying all your needed intestinal bacteria such as with some laxatives.
  • To keep from harming the body it should have a healthy compliment of multivitamins to make sure the body gets as much of what it needs as possible. This will also help cravings during and after the cleanse.
  • It should have some protein to help keep the body from cannibalizing it's own muscle and brain tissue.
  • The cleanse should be calorie restrictive but not force the user into more than a 1000 calorie per day deficit.
  • A cleanse can be done in as little as a couple days or can be drawn out. Maintaining an excessive calorie deficit for longer than a few days can send the metabolism into hibernation mode making it harder to keep the weight off post-cleanse.
  • Any food that supplements the cleanse should be raw and organic to keep neurotoxins out and living enzymes in. In my cleanse, I do have a green salad and 4oz white meat with a vinaigrette dressing for dinner.
Fortunately I don't have to design my own cleanse or try to source and research all the stuff! Beachbody has a product that I think would work better; a nutrition shake from the makers of P90X called Shakeology.

Shakeology meets all the requirements above. I have seen women lose as much as 10lbs and 3 inches around their belly in 3 days. I have seen men lose up to 8.7lbs and 2 inches. So long as your workout isn’t P90X, Insanity, or Turbo Fire, you can even keep working out moderately during this cleanse.

I can email you specifics. This is not a gimmick or a magic pill. It works for the reasons mentioned above. It isn’t designed to be a cleanse but as a once daily meal replacement. Because of it’s nutrient density, low calorie, easily digestible nature, it makes for a great cleanse product also.

Basics are this:
  1. Decaf green tea when you wake.
  2. Shake for breakfast
  3. Organic fruit/vegetable snack mid morning
  4. Shake for lunch
  5. Organic fruit/vegetable snack mid afternoon
  6. Green salad with 4oz white meat and vinaigrette dressing for dinner
  7. Shake for evening snack
  8. Do this for 3 days
  9. Jump into a healthy eating and exercise plan

This keeps you at about 50 servings of fruit and vegetables per day while keeping you under 1000 calories per day depending on your fruit snacks and about 72g of protein per day.

It’s more than a weight loss product but it does work for that.

If you're looking to jump-start a new lifestyle, get in contact with me. I can show you how countless people have changed their health significantly with one simple shake.
